Research Solutions

James Hutton Limited offers a comprehensive range of research and consultancy solutions for the agrifood, oil and gas, environment, water, land and related sectors.

Bio Mathematics and Statistics

Bio Mathematics and Statistics

Biomathematics and Statistics Scotland (BioSS) is able to offer customers an unparalleled array of expertise in the application of mathematics and statistics to agriculture, the environment, food and health. Particular areas of expertise, for which BioSS has an international reputation, include statistical genomics and bioinformatics, process and system modelling and statistical methodology and experimental design. Input from BioSS can be included in projects commissioned through James Hutton Limited to ensure sound experimental design and robust statistical evaluation, or alternatively, BioSS consultants can provide advice and analysis of third party data for clients. The Information and Computational Sciences Group at the James Hutton Institute brings together an exceptional combination of scientific skills and expertise including genome scale bioinformatics and visualisation software to the modelling of climate information on a geographical scale.

Crop Genetics

Crop Genetics

The James Hutton Institute is a world leading centre for crop genetics research that is underpinned by some of the best characterised and diverse germplasm collections in the world, including the Commonwealth Potato Collection and mapping populations of barley, soft fruit and potato. These collections are being mined for desirable genes for valuable traits. These traits include not only pest and disease resistance, yield improvement and increased abiotic stress tolerance, but also improved nutritional quality, flavour, texture or shelf life. James Hutton Limited is interested in working with customers to develop molecular markers for traits of interest or developing new breeding technologies based on a greater understanding of the control of recombination in crop plants. Other areas of expertise include understanding plant pathogen interactions, especially the role of effectors, association genetics and the linking genotype to phenotype through the development of genetic linkage maps.

Integrated Pest Management

Integrated Pest Management

The James Hutton Institute has the expertise necessary to develop integrated pest management strategies for customers by developing tool boxes of flexible solutions that can be deployed in a wide range of agricultural and horticultural contexts. Research projects could involve working for clients in developing complete strategies for specific situations, or developing specific tools with wide applicability. Examples include developing crop protectants, particularly resistance elicitors to insects, nematodes and pathogens and other biopesticides, development of new resistance sources, development of sets of indicators for plant and insect communities that define the degree of risk of introducing management practices, biocontrol strategies and efficacy, modelling and forecasting pathogen spread and defining 'ecological engineering' solutions to pest problems by models of spread and dynamics (gene to landscape).

Molecular Diagnostics

Molecular Diagnostics

James Hutton Limited Molecular Diagnostic tests can detect specific sequences in plant DNA or RNA that may be associated with disease resistance, quality/agronomic traits and varietal issues.

These diagnostic tests can be applied to early generation breeding material or developed varieties using a range of tissue types.  James Hutton Limited can offer a range of diagnostics for soft fruit, potato, barley and soil.
