Raspberry Summer Tasting Videos

With no soft fruit tasting events to attend this summer, we roped in a few of the teams' family and friends to sample some of our raspberries and let us make film of their reactions. 

Glen Mor; The New Raspberry that Gives More

Among the three new raspberry varieties James Hutton Limited has released to soft fruit growers in 2020, Glen Mor is the floricane raspberry variety the industry has been waiting for, with genetic marker Rub118b conferring resistance to raspberry root rot, Phytophthora Rubi.

Creating Better Barley for Ethiopia

Barley is grown by 4 million Ethiopian farmers and is used for food, feed and as a cash crop. At the James Hutton Institute, researcher, Girma Fana, is examining the genetic diversity of Ethiopian barleys to improve food security in his home country.

Lucozade Ribena Suntory Continues Investment for Blackcurrant Breeding

James Hutton Limited is proud to continue playing a central role in developing new blackcurrant varieties for Ribena. A £500,000 investment from parent company, Lucozade Ribena Suntory, will fund research at the James Hutton Institute to develop climate-resilient blackcurrant varieties, safeguarding the future of the crop and helping to secure the livelihoods of UK blackcurrant growers.

Barley Genotyping and it's Use in Pedigree Analysis

The James Hutton Institute has been at the forefront of developing genetic markers for barley.  The most recent development from James Hutton Institute scientists is the 44,000 SNP chip for barley (known as a 50K SNP chip).

Premier Primocanes from Breeding Programme

​​​​​​​James Hutton Limited is introducing three new raspberry varieties to soft fruit growers in 2020 including two primocanes, Lewis and Skye. 

Planting Positivity

Over the past few weeks, we have seen some terrific displays of solidarity and teamwork. A great example is office and laboratory staff joining their field based colleagues, to ensure that this seasons commercial potato trials and clonal material were planted to schedule.
